Presidents of the 1930s
In the 1930's, Hoover and Roosevelt were the two presidents. Roosevelt dominated the executive branch during the 1930's decade. He came up with a plan to help the 130 million unemployed workers in the United States. Roosevelt pledged to pursue relief, recovery, and reform. He proposed the New Deal which created many federally funded programs, commonly known as ‘alphabet agencies’, to help with the depression. However, because of the excessive government interference during this time, Roosevelt has been accused as a dictator running a socialistic government.
Franklin D.Roosevelt
FDR was chosen by the Democratic party to run for president in 1932. He beat Herbert Hoover in the 1933 elections to become our nations 32nd president. The former governor of New York and Harvard graduate was given the task of pulling America out of its deep depression. In his first hundred days in office, FDR instituted his "New Deal" policy which consisted of the three R's of the economy, relief, recovery, and reform. He created numerous programs to help the unemployed and struggling farmers and also encouraged labor union growth. His radio voice gave him good charisma and his repeal of prohibition made him a very likable man among Americans which was enough to win him his second consecutive election in 1936. Although his first two years in office brought him much successes and brought Americans back on the path to a recession, in 1937, America had gone into another depression.
In 1938, FDR gave strong diplomatic and financial support to China and Great Britain as they held off Nazi attacks from Germany. Although he remained neutral, FDR supplied many ally nations with guns and ammunition through his "lend and lease" program. He soon became close friends with British Prime Minister Winston Churchill to talk about war strategies that the neutral Americans might use soon. On December, 7th, 1941, Pearl harbor, Americas largest naval base was attacked by Japanese air planes and over 3,000 Americans died. This pushed the United States to enter the war and lead to the construction of the first nuclear bomb. During World War 2, FDR dropped unemployment down to under 2% as the economy grew rapid;y and created new jobs.

Many people would say that even with the socialistic feel of government in the 1930’s, Roosevelt did a very good job in helping the country out of the depression and easing us into WW2. Roosevelt has an average rating of #2 out of all the presidents, second only to Abraham Lincoln. Even being faced with the great depression, and WW2, Roosevelt led the country effectively, making him the highest rated democratic president in history. However, many people today say that he is responsible for setting the precedent of our nation’s enormous national debt. Besides this, the people of America loved him, along with the Latin American nations who loved Roosevelt, despite their normal animosity toward Americans.
